Olympic Sailing Preview at Sail for Gold Regatta

Boating and Sailing News - 19 Sep 2009

Weymouth, UK - Sailing fans had a preview this week of what the 2012 London Olympics may hold in store for sailors, as dinghy racers from around the world gathered to compete at the Sail for Gold Regatta at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. The first Olympic venue to be completed for the 2012 Olympics, the Academy seems to have been well planned and finished, as it had no trouble accommodating the over 747 competitors, from a total of 38 nations, who competed in this final regatta of the World Cup Series. As opposed to the disappointingly light winds that competitors experienced in China during the last Olympics, it appears that Weymouth and Portland may offer the next crop of Olympian sailors much better conditions.

Ben Ainslie Wants America's Cup Sailing - Interview

Boating and Sailing News - 30 May 2009

Triple Olympic Gold Medalist Ben Ainslie would like to sail for the America's Cup.  He has the skill, the sponsors, the team, the boat...  but not the race.  Tied up in legal dispute, the Cup is now out of reach for all but two teams. Amid Alinghi's statement that it will be discontinuing its 2009 monohull match racing, as well as rumors that there's a new BMW Oracle boat in the sheds of Anacortes, it looks like there could be dark clouds forming again on the horizon, and it's hard to say when, precisely, Ben and others will get their shot.  It raises the question:  If the best can't hope to sail for the America's Cup, then is the Cup still about being the best?

Boating and Sailing News - 24 Aug 2008

Qingdao, China - The 2008 Olympic sailing is now behind us. The medals have been awarded, the fireworks have been fired, the sails have been furled, and the party's over. Qingdao will be hosting the 2008 Paralympic Sailing shortly, but love 'em or hate 'em, the 2008 Olympics are done. In what has been called the worst Olympic sailing venue ever, the races were run - successfully for the most part - and despite all of the difficulties with the conditions and the host country, the Olympic sailing was just that: successful if not ideal.

Boating and Sailing News - 21 Aug 2008

Qingdao, China - The Olympic Gold was largely up for grabs in the medal race for the Star Class, and that fact showed through in the racing. With a decent breeze and big seas, it was time for the heavyweights to show off a bit, and show off they did. Great Britain, Brazil and Sweden all had a shot at the top of the podium, and it was through persistence and unrelenting drive that Britain's Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson took the Gold.

Olympic Sailing Medals - Tornado's Swan Song

Boating and Sailing News - 21 Aug 2008

Qingdao, China - Is it fitting that the last Olympic race the Tornado Class may ever see was also the fastest, most exciting sailing of the 2008 Olympics? Yes it is. After watching the various one-design sailboats bob around in almost no wind for most of the Beijing Olympics, the Tornado Class got one last chance to show the spectators why this became an Olympic class in the first place - speed, skill and action. With race speeds reaching 18 knots, it became clear to everyone why this boat is the thoroughbred of the Olympic fleet, and now it is gone.
