The Sailor-nator?

15 Nov

Sacramento, USA - Arnold Schwarzenegger seems to have a taste for salt water.  It looks like the upcoming Clipper 09-10 Round the World Yacht Race will include a yacht named for the Golden State, and this week California's "Governator" made a statement in regard to the race, the boat, and his quest for cyborg victory of the seas:  "California will be the best boat out there," he said, in a hauntingly metallic voice.

New York Wins Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

07 Jul

The sailing crews of the 07-08 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race arrived back in Liverpool on Saturday, marking the end of their 35,000-mile circumnavigation. These amateur sailors (each boat having a professional skipper) battled it out around the world, sailing through calms and gales - enjoying all the pleasures, pains, mechanical breakdowns, and various character building experiences of a circumnavigation under sail.

Irish Sea, UK - The sailing fleet from the 07-08 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is now on the final stretch, and expected to land in Liverpool Saturday the 5th of July. This 14th leg of the 35,000 mile race is a short sprint from Cork, Ireland to Liverpool, UK, and will give the sailing teams the chance for one last competition before closing the loop on their circumnavigation.

As the sixth Clipper Round the World Yacht Race comes to a close, we can reflect on the last ten months and the effect that 35,000 miles of racing has had on the 400 people’s lives who participated as crew in the race.

Firstly they will have become competent sailors, and for those who had never sailed before they joined the Clipper Training programme a year or more ago, this means they have learned a new sport. But they have not done this in the sheltered waters of the Solent; they have done it through all the oceans of the world, in calms and in storms.

Clipper Race 13 - Bobbing Around the Grand Banks

18 Jun

Grand Banks, Atlantic Ocean - With the second-to-last leg of the Clipper Round the World Race on its third day, the crews are anything but happy about the weather. Typical Grand Banks fog has been augmented by little-to-no wind, and the teams are bobbing around, hoping a low will form to kick things up. In the meantime, it'll continue to be slow going in pea soup for the boats. Weather reports are predicting possible relief later today.

Sailing through contrasts - Robin Knox-Johnston

Just over two weeks ago the Clipper crews were enjoying the heat and sun of the Caribbean, now they have moved to the rain and fog of the north east Coast of America and the Grand Banks off Nova Scotia. It’s the sort of contrast that sailors take in their stride as they traverse the world, and shorts and t-shirts are replaced by thermal gear and wet weather gear as temperatures drop.
