A Visit to the Southampton Boat Show - Dee Caffari

How fickle the weather can be but how grateful are we for some long awaited sunshine. I had almost forgotten what the sun looked like! The agreeable weather is fantastic news for the PSP Southampton Boat Show which opened on Friday with Mike Golding bringing the victorious Olympic sailors to the show onboard ECOVER. It was a great opportunity to see some famous faces and the ten day event looks set to be a great success as it celebrates its 40th year.

A Sunny Southampton Boat Show - Ellen MacArthur

I had a great day Friday at the Southampton Boat Show - and it even stopped raining for a bit!

In the morning, I joined Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Lady Pippa Blake, actress Kate O’Mara (known for her role in the ’80s TV series Howards Way) and powerboat racer Steve Curtis on the main stage to represent boating through the decades since the 1960s. It was really fantastic to see Suhaili, Sir Robin’s teak-hulled ketch on display - what a fine, sturdy-looking boat she is!

Southampton Boat Show

13 Sep

Southampton UK - I guess all boating aficionados have something of a chemical imbalance in the brain, something like a compulsive disorder. Like the chemical imbalance in the brain of someone in love that scientists apparently have labeled ‘pathological romance’. It’s all down to a lack of the neurotransmitter serotonin, apparently. This perhaps explains why, despite the gloomy economic forecasts, so many had turned out for the first day of the Southampton Boat Show, which opened Friday.

Berkshire, UK - Set against a stunning backdrop of the River Thames in Berkshire, this small informal show is a relaxed antidote to bigger, more commercial boat shows.

Town Bans Whistling to Aid Sailors

06 Jun

Portsoy, Scotland - Officials of the port's Scottish Traditional Boat Festival have strong-armed the local government into banning whistling for an entire town. While walking to work, citizens may hum or sing, and a pretty girl may receive a verbal complement, but putting one's lips together and blowing are simply not allowed. Last year's festival saw some rotten weather, and this year, nobody's taking chances.

Back around the turn of the century, while working for the big boys from Silicon Valley, we called it the Gee Whiz factor. The more mundane the product (and you can't get much more boring than a computer chip), the more flashy the promotion.
