pirate attackA Spanish boat, the Playa de Bakio carrying a crew of 26, has been taken over by pirates off the Somali coast according to a spokesman from Spain's foreign ministry. The crew of the Playa de Bakio are being held hostage for ransom aboard the boat.

Like a fire hose, somebody can simply point his/her automatic rifle at you and tell you to turn it off, but at least it doesn't require the crew to stand, facing the muzzles, squirting water.

Although most places in the world are relatively safe, and free of pirate attacks, there are currently some big problem areas we need to warn mariners about.

Piracy in Somalia

Piracy is a problem for sailors at several locations around the world but especially dangerous is the Somalian coastline. All ships advised to keep a distance of more than 200 nm from the coast and still there is reports of piracy attacks on ships at 180 and 210 nm out.

I know that cruising sailors often get together in a flotilla and travel these waters together - sometimes even under close supervision from the US navy, who is present in this area.
