Round the Island Race - Sailing 'Round the Isle of Wight

Boating and Sailing News 28 Jun

Robin Knox Johnston and Ellen MacArther - JP Morgan Round the Island Race

Isle of Wight, UK - If you're one of what some predict will be the 16,000 participants sailing in this year's Round the Island race, what are you doing reading this? You've got a race to get ready for!

For the rest of us unlucky souls:

After Friday's preparations that have, for some, carried straight into Saturday, the race is about to begin. Current weather conditions are a bit on the dreary side, but the Sun is expected to make an appearance later in the day. Winds should be sprightly, with 15-20 kts sustained, gusting to 25+, pushing 1.5 - 2 meter seas.

Within just a few hours, at 0600 local time, the first of the fleet are expected to take the line. It should be a great day's racing, with YachtPals throughout the fleet. To tide you over, here are a few pics from Friday. As always, send us your own photos. And for all you competitors who kept reading: Fair winds, big smiles, and no yelling!

An amazing day's racing was held, with ICAP Leopard breaking the record, Hugo Boss being DQ'd for a collision, several DNF's from some top sailors (including Dame Ellen's BT), blown chutes, big winds, and fast sailing. We're receiving a steady flow of results and photos, and will publish a wrap-up tomorrow of the thrills and spills of this enormous sailing event.
