Sailing at the Olympics - Yngling

Qingdao, China - It looks like there may be a sequel to last Olympics' "Three Blondes on a Boat" as the Yngling ladies from Britain are in first place after the first two day's sailing.  The Olympic sailing course in Qingdao is a bit of a crap-shoot, where taking chances can pay off big, or leave you gasping at the back of the fleet.  So, thus far, it's been the consistent racers who are staying on the top of the boards, while the inconsistent teams have been winning (and losing) the races by gambling it all.  Sometimes you get the panda bear, and sometimes the panda bear gets you.

In day one's racing, it looked like the Canadian team of Jennifer Provan, Martha Henderson and Katie Abbott had something to prove.  Canada didn't actually qualify originally, and the team was only allowed to compete as a late entry.  A 5th in the first race and a 4th in the second put them in second place overall for day one, showing the world that Canada was there to win.  But tactics didn't pay off as well today for the Canadians, as they dropped to 12th overall.

Norway's day two showing was impressive, and exemplified the volatility of the Olympic venue as the team rose up from its double-digit finishes to see Siren Sundby, Lise Birgitte Fredriksen, and Alexandra Koefoed in 5th on the first race and with a bullet on today's last race, placing them behind Australia, whose erratic results reflect that Krystal Weir, Karyn Gojnich and Angela Farrell are willing to roll the dice.

Good luck catching the Brits! Congrads on getting to China! Been watching from North Carolina but thinking of the GSB and sailing at Wet Pants and Sayville. You where my son Ray's sailing instructor at Wet Pants long before you became a sailing rock star!

Yngling Class at the Olympics - Women's

Annemieke Bes, Mandy Mulder and Merel Witteveen won today's only Yngling class sailing race at the Olympics to close the gap on overall leaders Sarah Ayton, Sarah Webb and Pippa Wilson of Great Britain to just one point. This has set the scene for a truly nail-biting Olympic medal race, which has been scheduled in Qindao on Saturday.

While the sailing team from Great Britain known as 'Three Blondes in a Boat' are back to back World Champions, and were a favorite to win coming into the Olympic games, the Dutch team came in as underdogs. Coming into the Olympic Games by the unique Dutch selection process of rotating nine sailing crew in three different boats, their final Yngling sailing team for Qingdao had only been formed a few weeks prior to the Olympics!

Who wins out in tomorrow's racing is very difficult to call. The crew from Great Britain are relishing the challenge, “We put enough pressure on ourselves to win gold every day that we sail,” Wilson said. “It’s great to be in this position, but we want gold so we’ll do everything we can to make that happen. It’s always been about coming home with a gold medal for us, for Great Britain, for everyone that’s supported us - that’s always what our program’s been about.”

Meanwhile, the battle for the bronze medal in the Yngling class is incredibly close, with just seven points covering the boats in third to eight place overall. Sally Barkow, Carolyn Howe, and Deborah Capozzi of the US Olympic sailing team are sitting at third place overall, just one point behind the team from Greece in third.
