Olympics Sailing Tornado Class Catamaran Sailboat

Qingdao, China - The Tornado catamarans took to the waters of Qingdao today for the first race of what may be the last Olympics for this class. Though fast and popular with spectators, the Tornado class is not scheduled for the London games, and the sailors of this speedy cat have a lot to prove. Unfortunately, Qingdao has little to offer these performance boats, as the light winds of the 2008 Olympic sailing venue - which have been wreaking havoc with the race schedule, and causing several class events to be postponed yesterday and to be cancelled today - are simply not enough to push these boats to their usual jaw-dropping performance.

Of course, for the competitors, it's not about the show they put on, but the competition. Sure, they'd likely rather be pushing their crafts to the extreme, but this is the Olympics, and you have to use what you've got. It's technical racing this year across all classes, and while the action isn't exactly compelling, the sailing has been exceptional. It's easy to sail in the right breeze, but it takes extreme skill to sail and win in the freaky, light, unpredictable conditions at these Olympics. Fast sailing may get you to the top of the leader-board in Qingdao, but consistently good sailing is what will keep you there.

After nearly three hours waiting, Race 1 of the Tornado Class started today in the weird air of Qingdao. Despite the lack of flying hulls and cartwheels, the Tornado class was able to turn in a good race today, and the results show some startling upsets, including Austria's 12th place finish. Greece and Spain put on quite a fight, with Spain coming up from 20 seconds behind for the win. Said Fernando Echavarri of the winning Spain team after today's race: "Today the wind was very difficult and, if these conditions continue, we will suffer a lot."

The Tornado Class standings show the results from Span and Argentina's protest and redress due to the race committee changing the course mid race.
