Sailing at the Olympics - Laser and Laser Radial Results

Olympic Sailing - Laser Class at the Olympics Anna Tunnicliffe

Qingdao, China - The Laser class boats started sailing at the Olympics on Tuesday, where light conditions saw the underdogs beat most of the favorites around the course. The 43 men sailed first in the Lasers, where we watched Julio Alsogaray of Argentina grab the lead early, and never let it go. Alsogaray was followed past the finish line by the sailors from New Zealand and Italy. The favorites, Tom Slingsby of Australia and Paul Goodison of Great Britain had nothing but trouble around the course, and we all watched the unusual events unfold to leave these Laser superstars in the middle of the pack.

Andrew Campbell of the US Sailing team, who finished in 14th and 18th in his two races, putting him in 13th overall, explained the upset, “It’s not impossible to figure out, it’s just really tough racing.”

Olympics Sailing Laser Radial ClassPaul Goodison made a huge improvement in Race two however, finishing second in the men's Laser class. The leader-board now sits with Andrew Murdoch of New Zealand at first, Diego Romero of Italy at second, and Julio Alsogaray at third. With many races still to go, the Laser class is anything but settled.

In fact, number one world Laser sailor Tom Slingsby has some hard work in front of him on Wednesday after finishing 21st and 22nd (in a fleet of 43) in races one and two. This puts Tom of Australia in 23rd place overall at 43 points. However, Slingsby regularly fights back after setbacks like this, and the Olympics are far from over with eight races to go until the Laser medal race.

One favorite that had no trouble in the tough racing conditions was Anna Tunnicliffe sailing the Laser Radial on the US Olympic Sailing Team. All eyes are now on Anna, who now sits at the top of the rankings in Laser Radial after two races!

"It was a tough day out there. I think the trick to the day was just trying to keep it simple," said 25 year old Tunnicliffe of Plantation, Florida. "It was good sailing. Shifty. The current was changing throughout the race. Tough conditions for sure. But fun."

Laser Radial Class at the Olympics - Women's Laser

Anna Tunnicliffe of Florida USA had a tougher than average race today, but still managed a fifth place finish, and continues to lead the 27 boat Laser Radial fleet with 20 points over four Olympic races.

Tunnicliffe had a bad start on race 4 but had begun to pick her way up the fleet to 10th by the first mark. Anna was then given a yellow flag kinetics penalty at the leeward mark of the first lap, just as all the boats were converging at the mark - the worst place to get a flag.  Tunnicliffe quickly saw six boats pass her, but not one to ever give up Anna clawed her way back through the fleet from 16th to finish 5th, and retain her overall lead in the Laser Radial class at the Olympics.  "Today I made a huge come back. The wind was very shifty, and I got Yellow Flagged for rocking on the first downwind leg. On the second downwind, the left side was wide open. I had nothing to lose at that moment, so I went that way and made it all the way back to the top of the fleet,” said Tunnicliffe of the USA Sailing Team.

Laser Class at the Olympics - Men's Laser

Paul Goodison of Great Britain has won race 4 at the Olympics in the Laser class, and now stands at the top of the rankings.

After a difficult start in the Olympic Laser Opening Series, Paul Goodison of Great Britain now leads the Laser class with 33 points after four races. Rasmus Myrgren of Sweden came in second in today’s race, and is tied on points with Goodison, but lies at second overall, while Igor Lisovenko of Russia sits at third.

Goodison was a favorite to win in the Laser class, and everyone was surprised by his slow crawl up the standings.  He seems to have hit his stride now though, finishing 1st in race 4 in Qingdao to top the standings.

"I was a little surprised to win today," said Goodison, who was the winner of both Olympic Test Events in Qingdao last year. "I got a nice start and after that it felt almost easy. It was a bit of a one way track with the tide and wind. I'm sorry we couldn't do another race, the conditions were nice," he said of the 6-13 knot winds on sailing course B in Qingdao today.
