Sailing Photo of the Week - Goodbye Olympic Tornado

Boating and Sailing News 22 Aug

Tornado Class Catamaran Sailboat

As we've said, this is the last year for catamarans in the foreseeable Olympic games, and we bid farewell to the Olympic Tornado Class one last time with this photo.  These boats put on a great show in the medal race, and it's been a shock to many fans that they will not be sailing in Weymouth for the London games.

Fans do have a voice, of course, and a million or so letters to the IOC, ISAF and/or TV broadcasters may at least get some attention.  The clean, "green", exciting sport of sailing is becoming more and more marginalized in the Olympics, and it is at risk of being dropped altogether.  If the sport can't stay modern and exciting, that may be the case.

Dropping Sailing from Olympics

Sailor (anonymous)'s picture

Well, after watching the creativity in rythmic gymnastics I can certainly understand where crashing through the water on a great beat on a Tornado should be eliminated from the Olympics. Of course, I am being cynical, it is absurd that some of the Olympic "activities" are never questioned in respect to cancelling them, such as the idiotic sport(?) of rymthic gymnastics, but the great sport of sailing is questioned. I guess the difference is that in rythmic gymnastics all one needs is a 19 foot ribbon rather than an 18 foot sailboat.

Enough said. Stevve Kridelbaugh
