A flare gun is a basic, and I don't ever figure on shooting anyone with it. But a flare in a boat, which should start a pretty decent fire and hopefully would at least slow down anyone trying to board me. I also carry a small, pistol type crossbow. Again not much, but something at least to give maybe a false sense of security. At least it isn't a firearm and I won't go to jail for having it aboard in Mexico.
There was somebody who was making a 12 gauge insert for the 25mm flare guns, that could supposedly handle buckshot! It would just be a tube towed in one place, the flaregun in another, and the buckshot loads in a flare package.
It would have to be a heck-of-a flaregun to handle even a regular, to say nothing of magnum, load. The same amount of force you're pointing at the bad guys is headed back at you, and a plastic flare gun (with a little hinge and hasp holding the breech) is not what I'd want on my end of that explosion.
How do I repair my broken wrist? The energy required to propel lead or steel (hopefully) pellets goes both ways, so you will have to put as much energy into the handle or the flare gun will jump back and up (called recoil). All of that energy will be transferred to your wrist. Good luck, and aim low as the pellets will go out at the angle the barrel is pointing when they leave the insert. Also use steel pellets please. Fish and fowl both eat small rocks or pebbles, and eat the lead shot that missed its target. This causes them to die a very slow and painful death from lead poisioning.
They make inserts for 12ga., 25mm and 26.5 mm flare guns to accomodate pistol shells (.38 and 45 cal. I know of, ) and shot gun (.410) .
The only thing being inserting or possesing both, insert and pistol round, on your boat, you now have converted your flaregun into a firearm under federal regulatiions and it must be registered so.
As for the shot gun insert the .410 may work in a 25mm older type flare gun, (heavy duty). I would only try low velocity 2 1/2 in. shells.
The 12 ga inserts fit 25 mm and 26.5 mm enabling them to fire a 12 ga round..They say it is to shoot 12 ga flares ONLY.
And there are the 12 ga. shells (low Velocity) that are only 1 3/4" long...These may work in older(not plastic) flare guns if one had to protect them self....
I think I willl stay away from International waters and just keep my "Hog Leg" handy for the pirates..lol
Swords?
I just can't believe how many carry swords!?! Yaaaaarrrrrgh!
Here's proof that a flaregun can't do much (to a drunken fool at least):
