Sailing School

As my profile indicates, I am presently in Iraq. I plan to treat myself (and my wife) to sailing school when I get home. Presently, I am a "basic keelboat" sailor. I have never sailed a blue water yatch. My wife has never sailed anything. I have spent a fair amount of time driving a 38 ft. Doral power boat.
Any suggestions on a sailing school? Any opinions on whether it matters if I pick an ASA school or a US Sailing school?

Where will you be stationed or live when you return? That information may get you a more meaningful list of schools. ASA and US Sailing certifications are both good.

I actually live in
I actually live in Oklahoma. I am thinking I want to go to Florida for school simply because Florida sounds really nice compared to Baghdad. But I am open to going anywhere in the continental U.S. I suspect I will be taking the classes in the late fall or winter 2008.

I'm near Seattle, Washington. Good luck in your search and thanks for doing what you do.

Learn and cruise sailing courses
John,
My husband and I did one of those "learn-n-cruise" sailing school classes years ago. It was an ASA approved class that took a week, bringing the class from novice to ASA bare-boat approved.
I would highly recommend this kind of intensive "on-board" class. We learned not only about sailing a large sailboat (we previously only had experience with power boats and small racing sailboats), but about anchoring, and the general problems of living on a boat (provisioning, customs, power consumption, etc.).
You will also learn alot about how you and your wife crew together and what your individual strengths are. This really helps to gain trust in each others abilities (a must for a sailing couple). Just my two cents, hope it helps
