I plan to begin my voyage in March, 2008 and as such have begun to investigate insurance that would cover me and the boat. Quotes that I have received so far are around $2,800 for a boat valued around $70,000. If you do the math, you would have to agree with me that this sucks. As such I am considering going without insurance. The only exception might be liability insurance which at a minimum is required in Mexico. There is a site, that I can get quotes from for liability, http://www.vagabundos.com, but would like to get other ideas, thoughts around insurance.

Insurance
There is good discussion of insurance options on the Islander 36 website:
Search for "insurance"
Most of it was for USA, I think, but Mexico may have been discussed too...

Neal Booth & his folks at
Neal Booth & his folks at Boat Insurance Agency in Seattle WA might be able to give quotes, at 800.828.2446; plus you will want Mexican liability insurance issued by a Mexican carrier (the only kind of insurance Mexico recognizes if you happen to collide with a panga or something) - for the Mexican policy you can contact Rowcliffe's Insurance in San Diego, CA (Google the email & phone info).
Mexico etc. insurance
I found insurance for Mexico, Panama, South America, Caribbean and the South Pacific at http://www.imiscorp.net They were recommended by some cruisers.
Insurance in general
I would strongly advise that you get insurance, there are just way to many things that could happen and I'm sure you could find a more reasonable quote. Where are you planning on traveling too and how long will you be gone? If you don't have any yacht insurance I recommend getting a quote from www.unitedmarine.net. There's also a good post on shopping for boat insurance on WikiHow at http://www.wikihow.com/Shop-for-Boat-Insurance.
Mexican Liability Insurance
The best prices I've found on Mexican Liability insurance is with Rowcliffe's Insurance, the ladies name is DeAnne, if you would like I can give you contact info.
