Moving the air conditioner

The previous owner had installed the air conditioner in the pilot berth above the starboard salon settee. Although it had been cased in teak, it just looked out of place. It did a good job of cooling the boat in the Texas heat, so I have been reluctant to move it. I also was not sure where to put it.

I thought that I could build cabinets in the pilot berth and do a better job of enclosing the air conditioner, but there was not enough room to make it look like a factory job. I decided to put the AC in the biggest and best hanging locker on board. I hate loosing the closet space but the reality is that we typically have many more folded clothes than hanging clothes.

So I measured for hours, and re-measured over several days. I could put the AC in the very top of the locker and keep a smaller hanging area below it. After building a shelf, I was prepared to move the AC unit.  I picked up the 72 lb unit and wiggled it over to the locker, where I realized the door was about an inch narrower than the unit. I would have to turn the unit on its side to get it in. Then I realized that the shelf was too high to get the unit in when turned sideways.

So the project will continue next weekend when I will lower the shelf and try again. I am also looking at adding another air register, so I'll be thinking about that all week.

Converted our hanging locker to shelves

Kim's picture

Wow, sounds like a big project, can't wait to hear how it goes. I totally agree about losing the hanging locker space, we converted our hanging locker to shelves years ago.

By the way, you can now upload a photo with your blog entry (it will also show up in your gallery)!
