Our friend Mark got his new sailboat delivered today! It is a Lyle Hess designed Montgomery 17, and is she ever a beauty. Built in Ontario, we were particularly impressed with its sturdy construction. She draws under 2 feet, so you can easily launch this capable little boat on a regular boat ramp, which is a real plus. At just 1600 Pounds, you can also tow it with a regular car.

Mark plans on sailing his new boat around the Sea of Cortez, and anywhere else he can launch his new pride and joy.

wow!!
very cool - although better start treating that teak right..... right away!
How do you figure out where the water line is to paint the bottom paint (before you splash it)?
hmmmmmm...

First, get yourself a BIIIIG
First, get yourself a BIIIIG bucket of bottom paint...
Waterline
I am lucky there is another M17 on the Bay, Svenson floated that one and put sawdust in the water to mark the proper WL. I will measure his from the top of the bow to the WL, then measure the stern the same way. I can level my boat, transfer the measurements and use a laser level to connect the points. At any rate it sounds like it might work.....and if not I'll repaint it later. I have also put 4 coats of Teak Guard on the wood. I like the result and hope it lasts awhile.
Bottom paint
Yeah.........they claim a quart of paint will do two coats.......it amazing how much these small boats cost to own!
