Well quite a lot has happened since I last write. Every time I have nearly got down to writing, something else has happened. Last night I was about to do some filming and send a blog when, as I was downstairs fiddling with the camera, the mother of all squalls came through, we broached, and I dealt with it in the usual manner and went back downstairs. Ten minutes later there was a sickening bang, the boat came upright, and there was a papery rustling sound which was my gennaker, or two bits of it.

Now, as of two hours ago, my writers block (not that you could call me a writer!) has been lifted as I have been released from the Doldrums. I thought initially that perhaps I'd escaped punishment, but it was not so. At one point I was trapped under a cloud that filled a 24 mile range radar screen - and boy, did it rain! It was almost Biblical! We just sat in the midst of it with the sails banging and slatting back and forth, which is a sailor's Chinese water torture, with the rain bucketing down.

There is no shortage of things to write about today after last night’s frenzied activities. I was snoozing in my bed when the boat began to broach - I was straight up, boots on and onto my feet, by way of pushing buttons on the autopilot to turn the boat away from the wind. Once on deck, I did the usual and eased the sails so that the boat will turn away from the wind again and the pilot can take charge, but nothing happened!

Eastern Atlantic - Amazing that it's only one week in, and nearly a third of the boats sailing in the Vendée Globe fleet have had to turn back. Tough storm conditions and bleeding edge boats don't always mix well, and in the rush for last-minute preparations, some of the IMOCA Open 60's simply weren't ready. Luckily, though some of the boats are in bad shape, the injuries reported were mostly in the form of bangs, bruises, wrenched muscles and tired backs.

It’s been very busy here since the Artemis Transat, but things are moving forwards. We noticed this morning that on the skipper page of the Vendee Globe website we had been moved from the “Pre-registered skippers” side to the “Registered skippers” side and our race entry number is 25, so that‘s it, we‘re officially in! It’s quite a milestone for us after ten years of work. We’ve been smiling all day!

Samantha Davies and the battle-worn Roxy crossed the finish line of The Artemis Transat just before midnight last night, after 15 days and 10 hours. Roxy is the first British Yacht to finish this year's Transat.

For the last 24 hours of her sail, Sam battled a biting and gusty 25 to 35 knot headwind, but crossed the line with a huge smile - despite a having a damaged boat, a rough ride, and both skipper and boat enduring a frightening collision with a whale at sea.

Just in From Michel Desjoyeaux aboard the open 60 Foncia: "About two hours ago, I was upwind doing 10 to 11 knots, I was in the boat and I heard a crack. I felt the starboard daggerboard hit something - it's probably broken. I can't get it up more than 1.5 meters. I hope there won't be a big leak.

The purpose of single-design classes in racing are to even the playing field and highlight the skippers' skills. Thus, the leading pack of open 60's in the Artemis Transat is still very tight in terms of distance to the finish, after more than 800 miles spent at sea. The initial North vs. South tactical decision that has spread the leaders along the latitudes, and how that will pay off for the individual boats, is what some say will make this race. 3rd place Sébastien Josse says the dice were thrown 48 hours ago, while his rivals remain skeptical.

Light winds, thick fog and heavy traffic marked the first day of the Artemis Transat, and race strategist Jean-Luc Nélias's take of the situation is that it will be a good race: "The race looks complex with many possible changes of leader." There's no doubt that the sloppy weather and shipping have put all skippers immediately on alert, and the differing strategies are spreading out the fleet - there's no easing into this race, not this year at least.
