The podium may be full and all the attention on the winners but spare a thought for all those still out there struggling in the cold, the wet and the light airs. Marc Guillemot in 4th place in Safran will be the next French arrival at Boston with only about 40 miles to go to the finish line. In 5th place within smelling distance of America is Samantha Davies in Roxy with just less than 200 miles to go. As Artemis was the great Olympian goddess of hunting, wilderness and wild animals spare a thought for those other superbly beautiful young women in the race. Dee Caffari in 8th place on Aviva with another 368 miles to go, struggling with inconsistent breezes, rain clouds, adverse current and fatigue. Miranda Merron on 40 Degrees, who is still out there among the following pack with another 600 miles to the finish. The gap between the following pack and the leaders in their newer boats is understandable. However, it is still the skill of the person trimming the sails, handling the tiller and plotting his route that counts. This all becomes more difficult the longer they have to struggle with shifting light conditions and fatigue. And don’t forget those fishy locals who are nursing sore heads.
