Anybody else running a HelmCam?

I've been running a Helm Cam on my boat for the past 2 or 3 years or so and havent seen many others (except ships obviously...).

anybody else out there with a boat based cam?

Mine refreshes every 10 seconds and is usually up all day until late evening. I often take it with me on charters or deliveries otherwise most "action" takes place on week end. Images are uploaded by celular connection.

Boat webcam

Super cool idea Cool

What kind of hardware (camera, connection from camera to cell phone etc.) are you using?

You can use this webcam while underway?

Pretty neat, we could all take a virtual tour of Biscayne Bay from the comfort of our couch Wink

it's real simple, any USB cam will do, they are dirt cheap now...

for software i use Active Webcam by PY soft, they have a trial version (with "unregistered version" message on the uploads), it cost about $20 to register it...   nice program with a lot of features.

The cellular uploads are done with an Aircard in my laptop, not by cel phone, although you can often use a cel phone as a modem (but it cost more in airtime, either minutes or data). Ssince i live aboard, the Cingular/ATT near broadband service is worth having (about $70 a month, unlimited), not much more than DSL or Cable for landlubbers and i can use it anywhere.

and yes, it works underway... anywhere in cel range.  couple of weeks ago, I delivered a 54 footer from Savannah to Tampa and had the cam running 99% of the time for a week long virtual cruise of the ICW.

boat webcamsThanks for the great information Pascal.  I'll check out that software.  We use our cell phone as modem, so it looks like all we need is a wireless outdoor webcam.

Looks like the webcams can be bought for as little as 50 bucks.

Then we could mount the webcam on our sailboat, and you can all join us for a virtual sail of San Francisco Bay Wink
