New YachtPals Web Server!

Boating Blog

Well, we served well over one million hits in February. Being that it was only our second month since launch, we were kind of caught with our bibs around our boots. Our regular server has done its best to keep up, but it's just overwhelmed, and recently it's been less than reliable.

So, we've built a new YachtPals.com server. For those interested: it's a multi-processor, big RAM (30x more) screamer on a set of fat pipes with fast, redundant RAID storage and true, top-down daily backups of EVERYTHING. For the rest of you: things should run faster and more smoothly, the site should be more reliable (though down-time hasn't been bad), and your lovely prose and pictures will be around for a long, long time.

Moving complex sites (like YachtPals) between servers sometimes results in a few funny things. We hope that we'll catch them all, but if you notice something, please bring it to my attention. I designed, compiled, configured and tuned the new server software just for this site, so I'm afraid that the buck stops here. No rest for the wicked – mea culpa and all that...

Cheers,

Salty Dog

Interactive Boating Maps

World map (http://yachtpals.com/map/node) is now showing all markers in Microsoft Internet Explorer on Windows XP, Yipee!  Can everybody else see them in IE?

Boating location maps on individual pages (like on the top right hand side at: http://yachtpals.com/boating/crown-tasmania) seem to be working much better now in IE, and we are now centered on the boating location.  Now we can more easily see where we are talking about, and can zoom in to see more detail Smile

Since I always like to navigate using the world map this is going to be much better.

So far so good.  Nice job Salty Dog Cool
