Last Saturday we were snuggled up at Hovgaard (Longditude - 64 Degrees 04.6 West Latitude - 65 Degrees 06.4 South). What a cool place…..no pun intended…… a magical lunar ice landscape! We were accompanied by Weddell Seals in the bay and a couple of lone Penguins on the shore. In addition we had a fellow yacht, Kamana, rafted up against us for the night, when they had been unable to make their destination the evening before.

When we last left you we were decorating the boat ready for our ‘White Christmas’! On Christmas Eve we weighed anchor at 7:30 a.m. and made our way out of our snug little cove, surrounded by ice…. we had been nestled in here for two nights at the Melchior Islands. We nosed out into the channel and set sail to the south on a beautiful sunny day with just a fresh breeze blowing. It is a glorious day deep within Patagonia and it sees us aboard the good ship “Commitment” nicely tucked up in one of my all time favourite anchorages. Estero Coloane is just 50 nm west of Ushuaia and is right smack bang in the centre of the gobsmackingly beautiful glaciers and fjords here in Tierra Del Fuego that were carved out by Mother Nature so many years ago.

Maybe this isn’t you but you might know someone who has a suitable boat….please feel free to pass this on to them….

Team Mowbray Expeditions is looking to beg, borrow, charter, hire, rent (not buy or steal) a suitable boat for an upcoming trip departing Newcastle or Sydney (or possibly Brisbane) bound for Norfolk Island and return, starting “latish” September, finishing “middish” October 2008.

Hey everyone, the last Patagonian trip and the 07/08 program of expeditions is done and dusted and I am back in the office…. great….I just love paperwork…..not!!!

When I last wrote I was about to head back to South America to finish off the last trip to the fjords and glaciers and, in part, this is what I said at the time….

Expedition sailing yacht “Commitment” is a Schooner rigged (two masted) “Ocean 60” built by Southern Ocean yachts, Poole, England and launched in 1981. She is of GRP (fibreglass) construction and was built in the days when they just kept “throwing the fibreglass at ‘em!” The boat is extremely robust and built for expedition work in tough, harsh and remote environments.
