Vanguard Nomad Sailboat

I don't have a Vanguard Nomad, but it sounds like fun.  Would love to see a photo, and hear more about these boats.

Can you car-top it, or do you use a trailer?  Can you sail with a couple people, or is it mostly for sailing alone?  Are there good winds on those small lakes in Texas?

i have a trailer for it. you supposed can sail with 6 people but i have only been with 3. the wind on the lake i sail on is good most of the time, sometimes it's smoooth and easy and other times i have to pay attention, it's all good. if you want to, go to vanguard.com for good pictures. i am a greenhorn at this sailing, put my nomad in some ugly situations and she still took care of me, gotta like that.

Vanguard Nomad Owners Experience

I bought my Nomad in early 2007 and have loved sailing it.  Normally, my wife and I sail it alone but I have also been out with a group (sons, daughters-in-law and grandsons).  While the Nomad will accomodate the family, it also offers some performance.  My frustration is not having contact with other Nomad owners to swap ideas and worry this will only get worse since Vanguard (now LaserPerformance) has stopped making the boat.

What I don't know, and have been afraid to find out, is how far the boat can be pushed.  We always sail with the float topping the mainsail, so I know capsizing will not be a catastrophe.  But I am very cautious and don't want to find out.  Can anyone offer stories?

Also, does anyone have ideas on how to avoid removing the mainsail after each sail?  I am reluctant to add a topping lift.  One thought I have is to make a "crutch" to hold up the boom and have a "horseblanket" made to protect the the sail from UV.

I have many other questions -- would like to compare notes with other owners.
