Artemis Transat - Warm and Sunny - Loïck Peyron Blog
Conditions are still quite incredible… It’s calm with a tempest of blue and 30°C on the deck of Gitana Eighty: you could also imagine you were in the Mediterranean. I’ve never experienced that in my previous four participations… I’ve never done this transatlantic race in swimming trunks before, particularly to the south of Newfoundland. All in all, our ice gate is appropriately named as, once you go through it, you're certain not to see any!
The seas in which we’re currently sailing aren’t making our task any easier. This chaotic sea is testing for the gear, particularly given the slow speeds we’ve been racking up over the past few hours. It’s not easy for the helmsman either.
Ca vient de redémarrer ! Mais les conditions restent tout de même incroyables … Pétole, tempête de bleu et 30 °C sur le pont de Gitana Eighty : on se croirait presque en Méditerranée. Je n’ai jamais connu cela lors de mes quatre précédentes participations … je n’avais jamais fait cette Transat Anglaise en maillot de bain, particulièrement au Sud de Terre Neuve. Du coup notre porte des glaces porte bien son nom, puisque en y passant, vous êtes sûr de ne pas en voir...des glaces !
La mer dans laquelle nous naviguons ne nous facilite pas la tâche. Cette mer chaotique est éprouvante pour le matériel, d’autant plus aux petites vitesses que nous avons connu ces dernières heures. Ce n’est pas évident non plus pour le bonhomme.

Wish I could be a fly on the wall on Gitana 80 tonight. I wonder what you and Vincent are talking about after being not more than 50 kilometers apart for the entire Artemis Trasat ;)

Double-handed in a single-handed race
C’est la première fois que je me retrouve dans une telle situation : naviguer sur une course solo en double. C’est assez déroutant pour l’instant car je m’étais installé dans un rythme bien précis avec des automatismes, des habitudes … Ce n’est pas évident, mais il va maintenant falloir que je me re-concentre pour attaquer la suite, qui s’annonce toujours assez compliquée. Mais l’essentiel était tout de même de récupérer Vincent.
It's the first time I’ve ended up in such a situation: sailing double-handed in a single-handed race. It’s pretty disconcerting for the time being as I was right into a very precise rhythm, making decisions automatically and with a set routine… It’s not easy, but I’m now going to have to regain my focus in order to tackle the next stage, which still promises to be fairly complicated. However, the essential thing was to recover Vincent.
