Sailing Photo of the Week - Dig It!

Boating and Sailing News 28 Aug

iShares Cup Extreme 40 Tommy Hilfiger

When a multihull buries the front of a pontoon in the water, it's called "digging in," and it often results in spectacular cartwheels, pitchpoles and capsizes. Nico Elshout caught this shot of the Extreme 40 Tommy Hilfiger racing in the iShares Cup earlier this year. Despite the acrobatics, injuries are fairly rare among these pro sailors. Riding the fine edge between speed and disaster is all part of the fun, and much of the reason why these boats are becoming so popular with spectators.

The iShares Cup series continues tomorrow, when extreme 40 racing will begin in the Kiel, Germany, and the action in this fleet is almost guaranteed to be exciting. No doubt about it, these cats are cool.

Current iShares Cup standings going into Kiel, Germany:

1. Team Origin
2. Alinghi
3. Holmatro
4. BT
5. JP Morgan Asset Management
6. Oman Sail
7. Volvo Ocean Race
8. iShares
9. Team Aqua
10. Tommy Hilfiger
