The Cruise of the Snark by Jack London (1911)

Inspired by the stories he loved in his youth, such as Slocum's "Sailing Around the World Alone," London ventured to sail around the world. With his wife, and a skeleton crew, he departing from San Francisco in 1907 aboard the 45' Snark. His first stop was Hawaii, where he learned to surf - Dude!
