Volvo Ocean Race - Yacht Troubles and Pirate Dangers

The Volvo Ocean Race fleet has run into a bit of trouble leaving the Southern Ocean, with the yachts Green Dragon and Puma experiencing some serious damage. Puma received structural damage while slamming off waves on the race from South Africa to India, and the yacht Green Dragon had an even more serious problem when their steering gear failed in a 50 knot squall, causing the boat to accidentaly gybe, and breaking their boom in two.

I’ve made up a small part of the deficit thanks to some nice weather, but I’m going to have to watch it once the others get going again. They weren’t very lucky hitting a wide Doldrums. Meantime, I’m getting to the zone with some wind, which has enabled me to make up some of my deficit on the group in front. It’s always nice to make up 300 miles on boats which have a 600 mile lead on you and know you’re the fastest of the fleet at nearly every position report. Even if you know why that is and that you can’t do anything about that, it’s satisfying all the same.

It’s a been a day in the sail loft for me on board Bahrain Team Pindar. I have been working on the A3 sail since 10am yesterday, through much of the night and will take at least all of today to get it finished. Hopefully then I can put it up to furl it and see if she stays up.
