Extreme 40 Catamarans

Boating and Sailing News 17 Feb

extreme 40 catamaranAlinghi took two Extreme 40 catamarans out for a shake down sail recently in Valencia. These light-weight, carbon fibre multi-hulled weapons were designed by Yves Loday, Herbert Dercksen and Mitch Booth with one thing in mind: speed.

Taking turns for the ride were Alinghi designers and sailors: Pierre-Yves Jorand, Luc Dubois, Dirk Kramers, Kirst Feddersen, Mike Schreiber, Kurt Jordan, Aaron Perry, Murray Jones and Pieter van Nieuwenhuyzen.

About Alinghi:
Alinghi is a coined name of the syndicate set up by Ernesto Bertarelli to challenge for the America's Cup. Bertarelli had raced several smaller yachts named Alinghi previously, but 2003 was his first attempt at the America's Cup. Alinghi successfully challenged for and won the 2003 America's Cup in Auckland New Zealand and successfully defended at the 2007 America's Cup in Valencia, Spain.

Alinghi is awesome!

Wow, when many people thought that Alinghi was in big trouble due to Oracle and the NY Court, the truth is that these guys look ready to start racing!

Oracle got one of those cats last week while Alinghi already had 2 of them weeks before... and if Murray Jones and Pieter van Nieuwenhuyzen are on board you can tell that Alinghi is damn serious about racing those multihulls full speed!

As mentioned in this article, Ernesto Bertarelli has often sailed (and won) many catamaran races over the years... I wonder if Larry Ellison will ever jump of board of his or if he'll let the pros try to win the Cup for him as he's always done! :)
