BMW Oracle Multihull Sailboat Testing

BMW Oracle America's Cup

San Diego, California - BMW Oracle Racing started testing its new 90 foot sailing trimaran in the waters off San Diego yesterday. After her 1,200 mile trip from the Pacific Northwest, the multihull was finally allowed to strut her stuff for San Diego sailing fans, and those lucky enough to be out on the water Tuesday were treated to a great show as the crew seemed eager to brush the dust of those sails, and experience the thrill of flying a hull in the warm San Diego waters.

This was the first test of many which will be conducted through November on the Pacific Ocean.  The BMW Oracle Racing Team is testing to see just how fast this America's Cup multihull can go, and to tweak the new boat to perfection, hopefully without breaking anything.

YachtPals' own Franck Cammas will be at the helm again in San Diego, taking turns with team helmsman James Spithill, as the primary test pilots during the San Diego testing.  “We are still in the ‘sea-trials’ phase, still testing and evaluating the boat and considering what modifications might be necessary,” said Spithill. “This boat will take some time to discover the potential.”

BMW Oracle Trimaran

We were on the water this past Sunday, as we sailed past Point Loma, we could see a large Tri South of us. There she was. they did not dust the sails to much, and seemed to have issued hoisting the main, unless they were just careful increasing the sail load. But that gave us an opportunity to watch her at close range and shoot close up pictures.

She is an amazing boat and from what I read, we should be able to see her again since she is scheduled to do sea trials in San Diego for a couple of months here is a link to the pictures http://gadeyne-us.spaces.live.com
