Cruising from Turtle Bay to La Paz Mexico - Blog

We have arrived after sailing for 28 hours at an anchorage off of a sandy beach on a remote island. The island is Isla Cedros. Turtle Bay, tomorrows stop, is 30 miles away. We had ourselves another adventure before leaving on today's route. Nothing wrong with the boat. Something more scary.

We are safely anchored in Turtle Bay.

We have safely arrived at Bahia Asuncion. Small quaint village. We may stay here through tomorrow so we have time to explore.

We made it into Punta Abreojos at 6:00 pm. No wind at all on this leg. Abrejos in English means eyes open. There are a number of reefs that you need to see and avoid and since i am writing this, means we made it through. We saw a number of needle nose dolphins today and a humming bird flying around our boat which was two miles off shore. I hope he made it back to land. Leaving in the morning for Punta Pequena.

It is 6:30 pm, we are at anchor and we are having our arrival drink as we always do. We are around Punta Pequena anchored off the village of San Juanico. We saw a number of dolphins again today but that it about all. It was a long boring ride but we made it. We have a long day again tomorrow as we head for Bahia Santa Maria which is at the top of Bahia Magdalena.
BTW, no phone coverage here.

We pulled anchor at 3:00 pm today. It is a 100 mile leg to Bahia Santa Maria so we will sail through the night ande arrive tomorrow morning. I changed plans because I didn't want to arrive at an anchorage that I was not familiar with at nignt.

5/23
We have arrived at Magdalena Bay at 3 pm. Leaving in a couple of daya for Cabo San Lucus and we will stay there one day before taking to La Paz.
5/24
Had planned to leave Magdalena Bay tomorrow on Sunday but discovered a leaking metal pile on the cooling syste. We will stay here tomorrow and assess our options. May go back to San Carlos. There is a hardware store there where we may find the parts we need.
5/26
We are back near the entrance of Magnalena Bay ready to depart for Cabo tomorrow morning. We have engineered a fix for our cooling problem that is superior to the original design. It is tested and we are ready again.

YEA!!!!
Phase one of my adventure is complete. Bob and I have landed in Cabo San Lucas, The Cape as the locals call it. We pulled anchor at 6:30 am on Tuesday morning and we arrived in our slip on Wednesday morning at 10:00 am. We are tired but still managed to get a fish taco and beer at the Cabo Wabo restaurant.
We are bruised, cut, burnt but otherwise in good shape. We have had moments when we thought we would die and many moments we were bored and everything in between. No manner what was thrown at us, we passed the test, fixed our problems with the boat and moved on to the next port.
We enjoyed the small ports we anchored at and the people that we met. The food was great, but it is also good to reach an area that we all relate to and that is a place where everything is available. Cabo is like a circus. A couple of days here will be enough. Given the places and the people we have met since we left San Diego, this is like stepping into the forth dimension.
We have complained along the entire route how cold it is. Well be careful what you ask for. It is 95 degrees. I used their facilities to take a shower and it is air conditioned. If it is hot tomorrow, I am going to find a book like War and Peace, go to the bathroom and sit there all day and read it to remain cool.
Our next phase to complete is to find ourselves in La Paz. The trip from here to there will be simple compared to the trip to reach here. We have traveled about 1,100 miles to get here and the time it took is 2 days short of two months. La Paz is something less than 200 miles away.

I am the great hunter! I caught my first fish on the voyage today as we sailed from Cabo San Lucas to San Jose del Cabo. It was 32 inches long and about 7 pounds. The fish is called Sierra. Never heard of it but it in a pretty fish with yellow dots on its body. For any vegan’s out there, I am sorry. I know, there are those of you that are suggesting that is was a 6 oz 2 inch fish. NOT.
We are in a small marina that is in the process of building up to a world class marina. Its’ name is Puerto Los Cabos. Very nice people but the rate is high. $2 a foot.
A short trip today and tomorrow which after a number of days of long voyages, we are enjoying this but it is hotter than hell. The beer consumption is going up with each day.

We returned to Puerto Los Cabos after experiencing engine over heating problems.
As the water temperature has increased from 55 degrees in San Francisco to 81 degree in Baha and so does the temperature of the engine so I am going to look into the cause tomorrow. Another adventure awaits.

Heating problem resolved. We arrived this evening at the next anchorage called Los Frailes. It is a national Marine reserve and a great place for snorkeling and diving. The only diving i did was and attempt to replace my zinc on my prop shaft that had fallen off. A boat anchored near us after we had been here for a hour and it turned out he was a neighbor of mine in Marina Bay in Richmond that I knew well. His name is Tom. He was across the dock from Bill and Jean and Jim and Jim on this distribution will remember him as well.
Tomorrow we head for Muetros Cove which is about 50 miles from here. Next stop if conditions permit will be La Paz. YEA

We have landed, or shall i say floated to our anchorage in Muerto Cove, other wise known as Ensenada de los Muertos. The name is given from the dead man anchors that were set on the floor of the bay that barges would tie up to when loading silver. They are starting to build a large resort here so the governor signed papers to change the name to Bay of Dreams. We ate and drank at the Giggling Marlin and a Five star resort. That is all that is here.
Tomorrow we are off to La Paz. The end of the second leg of this five year voyage.

WE MADE IT!!!! YEA!!!!
We are in La Paz. Our goal has been met!
Now I am off for an important and necessary shower and a cold beer.
I am going to stay here and enjoy a normal life for a few weeks and then fly back home to visit friends and family for a couple of months so clean out the spare bedroom and stock the liquor cabinets and frig. I am moving in.
That’s it for now so be safe out there.
