Sailing Photo of the Week - Big Boat Series in San Francisco

San Francisco, USA - One of the most challenging and largest regattas on the west coast of the United States, the Rolex Big Boat Series is currently sailing on the San Francisco Bay. "The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco," a quote attributed to Mark Twain, has continued to be accurate right in to September. The weather phenomenon that makes the San Francisco bay one of the world's most reliable sailing venues during the summer months (and up to 50°F cooler than just a few miles away) is in full force, bringing the 111-strong fleet of Big Boats some Big Winds - 15-25 knots predicted today with gusts to 30+.
The landmark in this photo is the famous island of Alcatraz, aka "The Rock." Alcatraz basically marks the southern end of what's known as "the Slot," where the winds funnel in through the Golden Gate, and reach their highest force. For some, the Slot is an area to avoid in summer months, while for others, it's a playground of heavy weather sailing.
The 2008 Rolex Big Boat Series is scheduled to continue through Sunday, September 14th.
